AMIA 2012: NLP for timely and accurate identification and extraction of disease characteristics of prostate cancer patients from the electronic

ABSTRACT: An NLP program was developed to accurately and timely identify patients with prostate cancer based on the pathology reports. Furthermore, the NLP program retrieves all clinical notes within 6 months of cancer identification from our EMR system. Tweleve variables are extracted from the pathology reports together with the clinical notes. Our study shows that NLP is both a reliable and accurate tool to identify prostate cancer patients in a timely fashion and to extract pertinent data from a comprehensive EMR system.
